Yay, new poll!

When will Baby Z show up? Vote now!

My due date is May 24th, 2009.

Hmm.

Well, today has been a mediocre day.

Went to the doc and found that I haven't made any progress since last week - still just dilated a fingertip width, although my cervix is soft and Baby has moved down even more (from -3 station to -2 station). She suggested I walk, walk, walk to get things moving. I sort of expected this and knew not to get my hopes up too high, but still it's a disappointing feeling knowing things haven't changed.

Another disappointing thing: At 5pm, I submitted a term paper for the only class I took this semester (taught by my advisors, no less) and I can safely say it was the worst paper of my entire academic career... It just didn't seem to flow right, and I couldn't think of things to say. WORST time for pregnancy brain to strike. I've been working on it for over a week, so that just goes to show you how bad my pregnancy brain really is. I will brag about one thing though - the figures I made to go along with the paper are pretty cool. Check it out:

I did that. Oh ya. Anyway, I'm thoroughly dissapointed in the quality of the paper. And to make matters worse, my advisors suggested I write the term paper to act as background material for my thesis. What the heck, why did I have so much trouble writing it then??? I've DONE the background material for my thesis. Maybe that's why I struggled, because it was TOO similar to what I'd already written. Bah. Oh well, it's turned in. This paper was a solid, complete and utter waste of time. I should have just turned in my thesis...
~~
PS. The figure I posted is a topography map of the solar system's tallest volcano, Olympus Mons, located on the Tharsis plateau of Mars. My thesis is about density-driven deformation within Martian volcanoes, particularly Olympus Mons and Arsia Mons (a smaller volcano to the southeast of Olympus). Interested? I'll let you know when I finish my thesis :)

Derek and I just looked back at my belly shots since January... Wow. I don't remember what it feels like to have a flat belly. Derek just laughed :)

I wonder how long it will take to get back to where I was???

Week 36

Your baby is still packing on the pounds - at the rate of about an ounce a day. She now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, that will form the contents of her first bowel movment. At the end of this week, your baby will be considered full-term. (Full-term is 37-42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 weeks are post-term.) Most likely she's in a head-down position. But if she isn't, your pracititioner may suggest scheduling an "external cephalic version", which is a fancy way of saying she'll try to coax your baby into a head-down position by manipulating her from the outside of your belly.

Pretty incredible, isn't it? I'm continually amazed at what is happening inside my belly. I don't have to do anything... no reading books, no learning any manuals... my body just knows how to make a baby. Amazing.

Derek and I are so ready for Baby to get here. We can't wait to meet him/her, finally see the little face, hold the little body that kicks and prods me from the inside. Only a few more weeks... less than 30 days until my due date, which I just can't get over. Time flies so fast!!!

My parents were here in Cypress for a visit this weekend. It was great - we did a bunch of shopping and got some last minute items for Baby and me (pack 'n play, receiving blankets, breast pump, nursing tops, etc). We're definitely feeling ready for Baby to arrive! On my to-do list for this week is "pack my hospital bag" (I know, I should have done this a few weeks ago... tsk tsk). I'm excited though- once it's packed, we just have to wait around until I go into labor! Oh ya, we also have to install our car seat bases and get them inspected.

I had a weird dream last night, probably because we had such an effective day, baby-wise. I dreamt that I went in for one of my weekly checkups, but I met with the registered nurse instead of my usual doctor. After she checked me out, she said "Okay, we're going to induce you at 4:30pm today, so I want you to drive up to the hospital now". I thought about it for a while and then said "Hmmm, No, I don't want to." So I didn't go. It was just weird. What does it mean???

As I said, great weekend with my parents! Now on to a busy week of school. Blah.....

Holy swollen-hands-and-feet, Batman!

That's all, no further text.

Dr.'s Appointment

Hello again, time to update about today's doctor's appointment!

I only had to wait about 10-15 minutes in the waiting room this time (thank goodness). All measurements looked good, Baby was a wiggle worm, moving around. Dr. said I'm still only a fingertip dilated, but I'm 80% effaced and my cervix is "pretty soft". She also said that Baby's head is definitely getting low (dropped) and she can feel the pressure I've been feeling on my cervix (don't ask me how, I'm not sure how it all works...) She suggested I start walking every night to help things along. As we were finishing up she goes "Well, at this point, anything can happen. If you're still pregnant, I'll see you next week!". I was shocked. HOW EXCITING!!!!!!! I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but still... I'm feeling crampy from the internal exam (normal, I guess) and it's such a nice day out, I think I may go relax by the pool! Gotta get a little color back on these pasty legs and arms.

Oh ya, and I made it home JUST in time to catch the UPS guy about to get back in his truck (he came by to pick up the dresser). Now the wrong dresser is on its way back to the store, and we just have to wait for the right dresser to be delivered. It better get here soon!

It's a good day :)

Disappointment.

Aww man...

I was all excited because our dresser was delivered today and I was going to set it up and then we'd have all the major things we need for Baby's room put together! I opened the box, started taking out alllll the pieces, and grabbed the instruction manual to start putting it together when I realized... "Hmmm, the picture on the front of the instructions does not look like the dresser we ordered. Wait a minute, this says 5-drawer chest! This is definitely NOT what we ordered!!" I considered keeping it, but the dresser came up to just below my shoulders so it definitely wouldn't work as a changing table (which we had planned to do). I was so bummed, so I called Target and told them about the delivery mix-up, so they're shipping us the correct piece and UPS will come by to pick up the other dresser. Of course, I had to repack all the pieces I took out, which is NOT easy (pregnant or not). If any of you have ever ordered a piece of furniture and then had to assemble it yourself, you know what a pain it is to get all those pieces out of the box so imagine putting them all back in so that you can close the box up again.... Ya, no fun. But it's done, so now we just have to wait for our new unit. My guess is that it won't be here for at least another week :( Boo.

Also this weekend...

We were in Bryan, TX for another wedding (it's wedding season, that's for sure)! This time it was for one of Derek's fellow firefighters, Joe, and he and his fiancee Christina got married in the fire station! Derek was Joe's bestman and did a great job keeping Joe focused and relaxed. It was pretty neat, seeing them get married in the station. As they were departing after the wedding, Joe and Christina rode away on the back of one of the fire trucks, just like in the movie "Ladder 49". Very cool idea!

At the wedding, we got to visit with our friends Mike and Billie, who just had a baby boy 4 weeks ago (I mentioned them on the blog right after little Daniel was born). Mike was one of Derek's groomsmen at our wedding, and he's also a firefighter too. I spent lots of time talking with Billie, quizzing her about being a new mom, and what was even more fun, I got to spend some quality time holding baby Daniel!!!! He is just so cute :) And such a good baby too, very relaxed. I got some great advice from Billie and I'm more excited than ever for Baby to arrive. Pictures below!!

Holding little baby Daniel, getting to know each other. In just a few short weeks, we'll be doing this with our own little Baby!

Parents-to-be with Daniel. Note that the pregnant belly also acts as a nice arm rest. :)

A la "Ladder 49", the newlyweds rode on the back of a firetruck to where Joe's personal truck was parked.

Week 35!!!

Baby belly, week 35. You can see that Baby sits lower now (compared to week 34 belly shot)
Your baby doesn't have much room to maneuver now that he's over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it's so snug in your womb, he isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete - he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

Well, the weekly report is right, things are snug in my belly! Baby likes to stretch it's appendages and really morph my tummy. It looks (and feels) like a little alien is in there. Or like I'm getting a massage from the inside. So weird! Baby still gets the hiccups but now I feel them much lower, on my cervix. And of course, Baby still likes my bladder :) A few nights ago, Derek and I were sitting around chatting when all of a sudden he said "You realize you've gone to the bathroom 4 times in the past hour??" Ha!

It's finally hit me that delivery is coming soon. I have 35 days left before my due date!!! 35 weeks pregnant, with 35 days left. Wow. All things considered (morning sickness, muscle pains, heartburn, etc.) it has been a wonderful, glorious, blessed pregnancy. Even though I'm feeling uncomfortable now, I'm going to miss being pregnant. I love feeling Baby move and I will throughly miss that sensation. But then again, we will have our little precious child with us in the outside world! Oh Baby :)

Maternity photos

Since I've been posting pictures tonight, I will continue... :)

My sister Mikaela took some pictures of Derek and I when we were in Austin a few weeks ago, and I think they turned out great!

Hi Baby!

Mike and Darla's wedding photos

Here they are, some highlights from Darla and Mike's wedding (fyi, Darla is Derek's cousin, on the Zivney side of the family)! They got married at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, a beautiful resort with indoor gardens (4.5 acres!), waterways and replicas of Texas hotspots (Alamo, San Antonio river walk). It was so cool. Both Darla and Mike looked fantastic, and so happy together. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Powers!!! :)

Mmm, breakfast.

There were several other weddings taking place the same day, all in different areas of the resort. This was one set-up across from where we had breakfast.
