Week 29

I know, I know, I'm in trouble. I meant to do this 2 days ago... Oops!

Your baby now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds (like a butternut squash) and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to matures, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demads, you'll need plenty of protein, vitamins C, folic acid and iron. And because his bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk (or find another good source of calcium, such as cheese, yogurt, or enriched orange juice). This trimester, about 260 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby's hardening skeleton each day.

Baby's energy is surging, thanks to the formation of white fat deposits beneath the skin. (Have those kicks and jobs to the ribs tipped you off yet?) Baby is also settling into sleep and waking cycles, though -- as you've also probably noticed -- they don't necessarily coincide with your own. Also this month, all five senses are finally functional, and the brain and nervous system are going through major developments.

My little squash baby. Baby is super active at night, so Derek gets to feel a ton of movement when we're going to bed. Also in the morning (when Derek gets up at 5:30am). I guess we know Baby will be awake when he leaves for work!

Hmmm, I guess that's about it. As you've probably noticed, we decided to spruce up the blog a bit and change the background. We wanted to add some pizazz, and I think we've accomplished that :)

I'll add a baby bump pic to this post, but it won't be until tomorrow. That will give you something for you to look forward to!

Relaxing weekend with the sisters

Kim and Mikaela came to visit us in Cypress this weekend! We had a good time relaxing - grilling chicken for dinner last night, talking about Baby, going shopping today and having lunch at BJ's Brewery (yum). It was just a short visit since and they went back to College Station shortly after lunch, but it was great to see them!

I've started getting Braxton Hicks contractions, maybe once every few days or so. It's the weirdest feeling! My whole belly gets really hard and feels like it's balling up. Completely painless though, thank goodness. Mikaela got to feel it last night, but by the time Kim came over it had started to relax. I think the fact that Kim's hands were freezing icicles helped relax the belly, haha!

Our Crib!

Renew Standard Crib by Rockland

Here it is, Baby's crib!  We finally bought it and we're so excited.  It has a dropside which will be great for me since I'm... short.  Now we just have to buy the crib mattress, sheets, bumper, etc. etc.  Can't wait until it arrives!

Hormones. What would I do without them?

I had a quick Doctor's appointment today, just for the usual checkup.  The doctor says everything is looking great and I passed my glucose test with flying colors (thank goodness)!  When the nurse came in to take my blood pressure and listen to Baby's heartbeat, she'd barely put the doppler on my belly before Baby's heartbeat was blasting over the speakers.  It's so great to hear how strong and fast it was.  I'll have to get Derek to try listening to my belly with the stethoscope tonight.

Hormone story of the week:
Last night when Derek came home, I was crying on the couch.  Why?  Because I was watching "Quintessential" on Discovery Health and the family was having quintuplets by C-section.  The babies were just the most precious things I'd ever seen - so tiny, with their skinny little arms and legs outstretched.  Seeing how tiny, helpless and miraculous each baby was just made me so excited for the birth of our little Baby, so I started to cry.  Oh, hormones.  Poor Derek must think I'm crazy.

And in terms of Baby updates... I can barely see my feet now unless I tilt forward :)  And I can now feel Baby moving when I'm standing up and walking around.

Hiccup!

Baby has the hiccups right now and Nova is sitting on my belly.  I don't think she feels them though... or at least she's not acknowledging any movement. :)

Week 28

Since I forgot to post this yesterday...

Weekly belly shot!
By this week, your baby weighs two and a quarter pounds (like a Chinese cabbage) and measures 14.8 inches from the top of her head to her heels. She can blink her eyes, which now sport lashes. With her eyesight developing, she may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. She's also developing billions of neurons in her brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

Someone told Derek that when she was pregnant, she would play with her baby while it was in the womb by shining a flashlight on her belly and moving it around. As she moved the flashlight across her belly, the baby would push where the light was shining. We'll have to try this!

I forgot to mention, when we were sorting through Derek's baby items we came across several of his baby outfits. They are so precious!

Little boy clothes :)
Derek holding one of the sailor outfits he wore as an infant. He's definitely too big now!
Sailor outfit and a baseball hat that says "Baby Slugger".

Back to Houston

Hello again!  Derek and I got back to Houston early this evening after a great weekend in Virginia.  Let's see what we've done since I last updated...

Sunday morning, we went to church with Lindsay and then we all had lunch at a fun Mexican restaurant, La Tolteca.  We spent part of the afternoon visiting with the Zivney's family friends before coming home and relaxing for a bit.  Lindsay and her best friend Ashley came over for dinner, and we grilled some delicious steaks (even though it was only about 35 degrees out!).  It started to snow shortly after the girls left and it kept coming down all night... by this morning, we had gotten about 5-7 inches of snow and it was 22 degrees when we woke up!  It was so cool to wake up to a white world.  Last time I'd seen that was, oh, about 9 yrs ago when we moved down to Texas from Canada. Derek, Dan and I spent some time outside, shoveling and snow-blowing the snow off the driveway.  Well, that's what Derek and Dan did, I just spent the time playing :)

Baby was pretty quiet all weekend, perhaps because of all the unfamiliar voices and noises.  It worried me a bit but last night it started to move more and today it was pretty active too, so that was reassuring.  It even had the hiccups again when I woke up this morning.  Baby is currently kicking and scuttling around in my belly, happy to be home and happy to see little Nova.  Nova was so glad when Derek and I came back!  She must have been lonely with no one to cuddle with.  Poor girl.

All in all, we had a really fun weekend!  This was essentially our last trip to the D.C. area since Derek's parents are moving to Florida next weekend, and it was a great one.  So nice to see snow, nice to see their home one last time, etc.  We can't wait to start visiting them in Florida from now on!

Nice.
No throwing snowballs at the pregnant lady!
